Matador joins Slovak battery production project
Matador, a major Slovak supplier of the automotive industry in the region has announced that it is joining an electric vehicle battery project in the country.
The project was set up earlier this year by US energy tech company Wildcat Discovery Technologies and Slovakian energy group InoBat. Matador announced its investment in the project earlier this week.
The project is aiming to revolutionise electromobility and energy storage in Europe by constructing a unique combination of R&D centre and production line in those sectors. The companies involved have also entered into a strategic partnership for a 100 MWh battery production line, InoBat Auto. It is expected to begin operations by the first half of 2020 and to be providing electric vehicles in the EU with batteries by the end of 2021.
“Matador Group is one of the premiere regional providers of innovative solutions for the automotive sector,” said Martin Kele, director general at Matador Group in a press release. “The Group has been strongly focused on the design and development of auto parts, advanced technologies for automotive industry, and on the provision of complex solutions in Industry 4.0.”
Matador's role is expected to be a crucial one in the development and construction of the InoBat 100 MWh production line, which will serve automotive manufacturers in Central and Eastern Europe.
It is expected that there will be an even greater role for Matador during the planned upscale to a 10 GWh battery production facility.
“Matador’s decades of experience in the automotive industry will provide InoBat Auto with proprietary access to development know-how for our planned production line as well as with access to leading auto producers,” stated Marián Boček, InoBat’s co-founder and executive chairman as cited in a press release.
“Together with Matador and Wildcat, our US-based technological partner, InoBat Auto will not only provide much-needed battery independence for the European market but will contribute to the transformation of the Slovak economy from manufacturing to knowledge-based,” added Boček.
The InoBat Auto project was first announced in July as a joint effort between InoBat and Wildcat. It is expected to bring investments of over €100-million, as well as lead to the creation of hundreds of jobs.
