EV charging
The US energy tech company Wildcat Discovery Technologies and Slovakian energy group InoBat have announced plans to construct a 100 MWh production line for electric car batteries in the eastern European country. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2020.
With a capacity for 1,500 EV batteries annually, the line is expected to be operational and producing by the end of 2021. The longer term plan is to expand the line to 10 GWh, creating a capacity of 150,000 power packs every year.
Wildcat and InoBat are prepared to invest €100-million into the project and the companies are currently in talks with the European Investment Bank (EIB).
“New strategic cooperation with Wildcat Discovery Technologies, whose clients include Apple, Samsung and BMW, for example, will allow us to build a vertically integrated supply chain, starting with research and development and ending with production,” said Marián Boček, co-founder of InoBat.
The cooperation will allow InoBat to utilise on Wildcat’s technology that combines high throughput experimentation (HTP) and artificial intelligence. Wlidcat has worked with clients such as Toyota and Samsung Electronics.
While the EV battery facility will be the first of its kind in Slovakia, French automaker PSA has said it will assemble the battery packs for electric and hybrid cars at its Slovakian plant. The sector is thriving in other eastern European countries too. South Korean battery maker LG Chem has set up a production base in Poland, and in Hungary, Samsung SDI and SK Innovation both have a presence.
