German electronics company WAGO has launched a new brand of power supply designed to help panel builders, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end-users a flexible quality control to suit a wide variety of applications.
With many modern control cabinets having an increased need to provide highly-connected networking capabilities, the German device developers sought to address the rising energy costs while allowing for end-user customisation where required.
Dubbed the 'PRO 2,' each device is fitted with software - a form of rudimentary AI - that can detect problems before they happen and formulate and optimise solutions on how to deal with them, something the company claim is "essential" in this sector.
They claim that all components in the industry, including power supply units, must be fitted with such measures to offer an enhanced range of functionality that can satisfy industrial needs.
According to its developers, the PRO 2 offers several benefits and has been specifically engineered for long-term performance in challenging environments, intelligent load management, customised configuration and offers easy installation via pluggable screwless connectors with energy-saving benefits.
WAGO has designed the supply to be as intuitive as possible, and most of the important operating data can be read from the front of the panel, while other important data can be gathered through complementary PC software, which can help provide real-time status updates to help users assess the situation on the go.
The supply can also be fitted with dedicated communication modules at any time, allowing for selection of the desired protocol for connection to automation and control level.
The developers claim that the "mean time before failure" (MTBF) - roughly equating to the mean lifespan of the product - clocks in at roughly 1 million hours, aided by the product being relatively low maintenance and reduced frequency of call-outs equate to the product being designed as a cost-cutter.
Each PRO 2 comes equipped with 'TopBoost' - a function that allows up to 600% output voltage for 15 milliseconds in the event of a downstream short circuit to safely trigger thermomagnetic circuit breakers - and 'PowerBoost', a function that increases the output of the supply by 150%, allows capacitors to be charged more quickly, and inductive loads are switched reliably.
WAGO claim the product operates at 96.2% efficiency while delivering lower energy costs and carbon emissions as well as a reduction in heat loss, allowing for increased ventilation to the power supply, which could aid in its supposed longevity.
Andy Turtle, Product Manager, Interface for WAGO said: “The all-new PRO 2 power supply offers a powerful combination of functional benefits to panel builders, OEMs and end-users. The built-in intelligence, connectivity and bespoke configuration options support the move towards an Industry 4.0 future and help users deal with power supply overload issues before they become big problems on the production line.
"With optimised energy consumption to help drive sustainability objectives while keeping control panels cool, the reliable long-term performance across challenging operating environments and simple installation demonstrates why the PRO 2 is a step change when it comes to an effective control cabinet and industrial system power supply.”
