Spanish multinational company Ferrovial, through a consortium with France-based Spie batigonolles Valerian, has been awarded a €438 million contract to build a section of the Paris Metro.

The work is part of Europe’s largest infrastructure project, the Grand Paris Express programme. The project will see 68 new stations added and 200km of track laid to form the Paris underground railway.
Under the terms of the contract, Ferrovial will be responsible for boring 6.7km of the tunnel between Saint-Quentin Est and Versailles-Chantiers stations located in western Paris.

It is estimated that the work will take 104 months to complete including the build of three stations and eight ancillary infrastructures, says Ferrovial in a press release.
Ignacio Gastón, CEO of Ferrovial Construction, said, “Participating in the Grand Paris Express mega-project evidences our extensive international experience in the design and construction of this type of urban infrastructure. Some of our most iconic projects can be found in such cities as London, Sydney and Madrid.”
The tunnels will be excavated using a tunnel boring machine to stay in line with Ferrovial’s commitment to the environment and to overcome any difficulties faced by the Fontainebleau sands.
