YIT Construction Ltd won the 2017 occupational safety competition in Southwest Finland in the Large construction companies category. In addition to this, As. Oy Merikapteeni in Naantali was selected as the best site in the competition.
“We are happy to receive this award and pleased that our work to improve occupational safety has been acknowledged. When it comes to occupational safety on our sites, we don’t cut corners under any circumstances. In the last few years, we have invested first and foremost in anticipation and encouraged our employees to make safety observations. This is an effective way of avoiding accidents,” says Jyrki Meri, Regional Director, YIT.
The award granted to the Merikapteeni site in Naantali is the result of good team spirit and an organised way of working with an emphasis on tidiness.

YIT revised its occupational safety strategy in late 2016. Three focus areas were selected: safety management and supervisory work, proactive measures, and smooth daily operations and effective tools, which are the subject of special attention.
Each focus area includes detailed measures, the success of which is measured by selected indicators. Site visits by management is one of the key indicators monitored on a monthly basis. The aim is to make the management’s site visits more open and dialogue-oriented. A site visit model developed in response to this objective will be put into practice early this year.
An occupational safety competition between building construction companies has been held in Southwest Finland since 1991. The competition has two categories: Large construction companies and Small and medium-sized construction companies. In addition to this, there are awards for the three best sites. The competition’s evaluation criteria include the sites’ TR index and the level of site safety planning.
