The world’s largest offshore wind farm – totalling an investment of £1bn – is set to open off the coast of Cumbria, UK.
The Walney wind farm already had 102 turbines in addition to the 87 added this year – named the ‘Walney Extension’. It covers an area of 55 sq miles and is capable of generating enough power for 600,000 homes.
According to Energy Minister Claire Perry: "Record-breaking engineering landmarks like this help us consolidate our global leadership position, break records for generating renewable energy, and create thousands of high quality jobs."

Its Danish owner, Orsted, began the initial onshore construction of the wind farm in 2015. Now it is completed, it will provide employment for around 250 people in operation and maintenance.
Orsted has pledged a Community Benefit Fund of up to £600,000 for each of the 25 years of the farm’s expected life-span. This will support community and environmental projects in Cumbria and Lancashire’s coastal areas.
