The new Golf's design will keep the classic hatchback lines of the current and previous generations but have sharper bodywork lines, reports say. The current Golf is shown.
Volkswagen has delayed the launch of the new Golf, the best-selling car in Europe, until next year as it completes the development of the advanced digital features.
The new Golf is to be given a fully digitalised cockpit with brand new features like permanent connectivity in order to make the hatchback more attractive to customers in a competitive market. However the advanced technology is having some technical glitches and VW has decided to push back the launch to deal with it.
The launch is pencilled in for the beginning of 2020, so to avoid a pre-Christmas car launch, a notoriously slow time for car sales.
"We think it's better to come early next year with a full throttle offensive. It doesn't have anything to do with production. It's a sales decision since you don't try to put cars under the Christmas tree when no one is paying attention," said VW brand sales and marketing chief, Juergen Stackmann.
The launch was originally planned to be at the Frankfurt auto show in September, alongside the premiering of the I.D., VW's next foray into the EV market.
It was announced in January that the new Golf would bring VW into an era of full connectivity. "It will have more software on board than ever before. It will always be online and its digital cockpit and assistance systems will be the benchmark in terms of connectivity and safety," said Karlheinz Hell, VW's compact cars boss.
Golf sales fell in Europe last year by 10% to 415,782, however sales of the e-Golf rose by 38% to 29,972.
