German mobility company Sono Motors today has announced its partnership with Bosch for their Sion electric car project. The Sion’s central control unit as well as the software for its intelligent networking will be provided by the technology giant.
Sion will be the first electric car with solar integration, which allows it to charge itself, to go into series production. The car was designed to cause minimal environmental impact and have maximum user efficiency, with car, ride and power sharing.
The Bosch Automotive Cloud Suite will aid in the Sion’s data connection with the cloud. Cloud connectivity is the basis for digital mobility services including the eCall automated emergency call function and charging.

"The mobility of the future must be devised in such a way that it is more climate and resource preserving and be considerably more efficient than it has been so far," says Roberto Diesel, Chief Technology Officer at Sono Motors. He adds, "Private vehicles remain unused for 23 hours per day on average. They worsen the problems of limited inner-city parking space and are often used by one person alone. The integrated mobility functions are therefore a core part of our car concept."
One of the central concepts of the Sion is the idea of making the vehicle as accessible as possible to the maximum number of users. An intuitive mobile app which integrates all the mobility services will enable users to share energy, rides or even the car itself.
As well as tackling the issues of environmental protection, Sono also addresses the problems created by an overburdened infrastructure, which they argue can only truly be solved by a much higher use of vehicles. The mobility services form Sono Motors’s second pillar when it comes to their business model, with car development and manufacturing as the first.
Sono Motors recently announced Continental as the supplier of the Sion's electric drive system and ElringKlinger as its partner for battery development and production. The company has so far received around 9,300 partially paid preorders for the Sion. Production is scheduled to commence at the end of 2019.
