Concerns over high carbon dioxide emissions have led Jaguar Land Rover to recall 44,389 cars in the UK. Regulators discovered that 10 models were emitting more CO2 than they were certified to. The conclusion by regulators is another blow the British car manufacturer which is dealing with a slump in diesel sales in Europe and sluggish sales in China.
The recall covers vehicles with 2.0 litre engines built between 2014 and 2018. Jaguar XE, XF, E-Pace and F-Pace as well as the Land Rover Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar, and Range Rover Sport have all been affected. Most of the recalled vehicles are diesels but just under 10,000 are petrol.
While some of the affected models will need physical repairs in a dealership, others will need software updates. Jaguar Land Rover says it is working closely with the UK DVSA on the optimal methods to "ensure the correct CO2 performance is dependably achieved."
"The modifications made to affected vehicles will be made free of charge and every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to the customer during the short time required for the work to be carried out," Jaguar Land Rover said in a statement.
The UK recall is voluntary for vehicle owners by any second-hand car business selling one of the affected models is required to ensure that all recalls have been carried out before the vehicle is sold.
Drivers may experience minor alterations to the "overall vehicle experience", JLR told a consumer magazine.
The company's poor sales in China, down by 48% have created a financial crisis inside Jaguar Land Rover. Indeed, JLR posted a loss of $4-billion in the third quarter of the 2018-19 financial year leading to concerns the company is running out of money.
JLR is undergoing a cost savings programme that involves cutting 4,500 jobs.
