To handle the growing volume of business and respond even faster and more efficiently to the needs of customers in the greater Lisbon area, Dachser is building a new logistics centre near the Portuguese capital to replace its existing facility with effect from the beginning of 2022.
With a total area of 59,200 m2, the new facility is more than twice the size of the current one. It occupies a strategic location with direct access to the highway and to Dachser’s close-knit European overland transport network.
The facility will be equipped with the latest technologies for cross-docking operations, such as a sorter system for picking processes and an in-floor chain conveyor to move goods around the warehouse.
“Customers throughout the greater Lisbon area will benefit from improved transit times between Lisbon and European markets, as well as the high level of service to which they are accustomed,” says Ricardo Carvalho, branch manager in Lisbon.
The new facility has 7,396 m2 of floor space for transport services and 65 loading ramps and can accommodate a possible future expansion of 3,796 m2 and 40 additional loading ramps.
The new branch will also feature a two-story office building with a total of 1,411 m2 of floor space. A parking lot with a capacity for 80 swap bodies and a waiting area for 15 trucks is planned as well.
“Truck access for loading and unloading is fully automated based on license plate recognition,” Carvalho says. Dachser is also focusing on sustainability at the new branch: solar panels, an aerothermal system for hot water supply, and a lighting and air conditioning system with low consumption and intelligent control will increase its energy efficiency.
The new branch is scheduled to open at the beginning of 2022, at which point the 150 employees currently working at the Alverca do Ribatejo site will relocate. Dachser has a total of seven locations in Portugal, with another new facility scheduled to open in Faro in 2022.
