European Commission flags
The European Commission has given the go-ahead to the Polish government over its plans to offer €64-million in aid to support the construction of a highly efficient municipal waste treatment facility in Gdansk, deciding that the aid complies with EU State aid rules.
The aid beneficiary is municipally-owned company Port Czystej Energii (PCE). The project will take the form of a public-private partnership between PCE and private businesses chosen through a competitive process.
The aid package was assessed by the Commission under EU State aid rules, in particular the Commission’s 2014 Guidelines on State aid for environmental protection and energy.
The aid will contribute to the bloc's energy and environmental objectives without undue distortion to competition in the Single Market.
Cogeneration increases energy efficiency by recycling the heat created as a byproduct from power generation and utilising it for other uses - in this instance, public district heating.
The project will also help reduce municipal waste disposal in landfills through the incineration of around 160,000 tonnes of currently landfilled waste. The Commission has said that this will contribute to the reduction of fossil fuels and CO2 emissions.
