Whether it is burglary, fire, or accidents in a child's room: Anyone who wants to secure their home usually thinks of concrete or steel. It is hardly known that plastic is an important factor in home security. Without innovative plastics, modern security concepts for the home would simply not be possible.
Buildings in Germany must meet the highest protection standards. Modern polymers, with their versatile properties and functions, play a key role in meeting these requirements.

Windows as a weak point: While high-strength profiles protect against attempts to pry windows open, extremely tear-resistant plastic films embedded within the glass prevent burglars from gaining entry by smashing the pane.
Plastic Films Prevent Break-Ins
According to the most recent police crime statistics, the number of residential burglaries in Germany rose by 5.7 percent to a total of 82,920 cases in 2025[1]. The German Insurance Association puts the insured total damage at around 380 million euros[2]. A look at the perpetrators' approach illustrates the relevance of high-performance materials: Around 70 percent of all burglars use a simple screwdriver to pry open windows or doors. Against mechanical impact, high-strength plastic window profiles provide the decisive resistance. If this attempt fails, perpetrators often try to smash the glass – and this is exactly where plastic technology comes into play. The security windows recommended by the police rely at their core on laminated safety glass (VSG). The key protective element is an extremely tear-resistant plastic film embedded within the glass[3].
In special glazing, four layers of this PVB film with a total thickness of 1.52 mm are pressed between the panes. If the glass is attacked, it does shatter, but the elastic film firmly holds the segments together. Since almost half of all burglary attempts fail when the perpetrators do not get into the building within five minutes, these high-tech polymers protect the place where we feel safest: our home[4]. This mechanical protection is supplemented today by smart technology: Neither weatherproof security cameras nor infrared motion detectors would be functional at all without their specialized housings and lenses made of plastic.
Cable Insulation Prevents Fires
Plastic also protects lives beyond the issue of crime. According to the long-term statistics of the Institute for Loss Prevention and Loss Research (IFS)[5], electricity is the number one cause of fire in Germany at almost 30 percent. Technical defects in household appliances or cables, according to the German Firefighters Association, trigger a large part of the around 200,000 annual fires[6]. Here the material-specific unique selling point of polymers becomes apparent: No other material combines electrical insulation, design flexibility, and self-extinguishing properties in such a compact form.
Modern plastics offer a life-saving barrier: Highly developed cable insulations consist of specially modified, flame-retardant polymers. In the event of a short circuit, these plastics prevent flames from spreading. In addition, they minimize the formation of toxic gases in an emergency – a decisive factor, as smoke poses the greatest danger in residential fires.
Specialty Polymers Secure Escape Time
In an emergency, every second counts: Modern synthetic furnishings can cause fires to spread rapidly, often leaving residents less than three minutes to escape[7]. In the 1970s, when slower-burning natural materials were more commonly used, residents had around 15 minutes[8]. Whether a spark even becomes a dangerous fire is decided directly at the source: While unprotected everyday items in the room accelerate the fire, highly developed, flame-retardant plastics in switches, sockets, and device housings provide a direct countermeasure[9]. They extinguish in seconds and do not drip while burning, keeping the escape and rescue time window open for as long as possible.
This also applies to smoke detectors: They owe their function to heat-resistant plastic housings[10]. Inside, optical sensor components and measuring chambers are manufactured in precise injection molding. Only this way does the sensor register smoke particles in seconds, without triggering false alarms due to humidity.

Lifesavers in action: Flame-retardant plastics in cable insulation stop fires from spreading and provide valuable additional escape time.
Smart Materials React Autonomously
The future of passive fire protection belongs to programmable polymers with shape memory and bio-based, halogen-free flame retardants. Current research shows that plastics can activate protective functions autonomously[11]. These materials react to critical temperatures without sensors or power supplies. When heated, they independently change their shape in order to close cable ducts or seal gaps in an emergency. At the same time, the Fraunhofer ICT is researching new halogen-free approaches in its “CircularInFoam” project to make sustainable high-performance insulation materials both fire-safe and suitable for a circular economy[12].
Impact-Resistant Materials Protect Young Children
Plastics also contribute to child safety. From certified socket protectors to flexible corner guards, the impact-absorbing and shatter-resistant properties of plastics significantly reduce the everyday risk of injury in the home. In the modern “Plastic Castle”, plastic demonstrates that it is far more than just a packaging material – it is an essential high-performance building block for the protection of life and limb.
