The Vienna-based construction company, PORR, has won the tender for design and building of a motorway in Romania. The contract, worth €129-million, has a total duration of 48 month; 12 months for the design phase, then 36 months for construction.
The contract was finalised between PORR and the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) and signed in the presence of Prime Minister Viorica Dancila and Transport Minister Razvan Cuc.
PORR will construct lot 1, a 13.17 km (8.18 mi) section of the Sibiu to Pitesti motorway. The 123 km (76.5 mi) motorway runs along the trans-European Rhine-Danube corridor and is an important European transport artery to the Black Sea. The motorway will also be the first to traverse the Carpathian mountains and the first to connect the regions of Wallachia and Transylvania.
PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: "This is already the third large-scale motorway construction project implemented by PORR in Romania. Our lot is the first section of the route from Sibiu to Pitesti, an East-West link of critical importance to Romania in terms of traffic."
The contract involves the design and construction of the four-lane section from Sibiu to Boita in the heart of Romania and covers the erection of twelve bridge structures as part of the motorway as well as a bridge over the road. The most impressive bridge is a 650 metre long viaduct over a valley. In addition PORR will build two motorway connections, a car park and a road maintenance centre.
