The Polish bus manufacturer Solaris Bus & Coach is to provide 250 electric buses to ATM Milano, the city of Milan's transport company. The first 40 buses are set to be delivered by June 2020, according to a statement by the company.
The agreement is one of the largest tenders Solaris has been awarded to date and the biggest electric bus deal ever seen in Europe.
ATM Milano chose the Solaris Urbino 12 electric model, adding the 150 Solaris vehicles already in use in the city. The Urbino 12 is currently being used in various cities in 17 different European countries including Berlin, Warsaw, Paris and Oslo and was the winner of the prestigious "Bus of the Year" award in 2017.
"The Milan carrier has an ambition to completely withdraw from conventional-drive buses by the end of 2030, and the producer of the Urbino (a Solaris bus marque - PAP) is to play a significant role in that electric mobility revolution," the company said in a press release. "Thanks to the huge framework contract, Solaris has strengthened its position as a leader among European producers of electric buses."
Solaris has stated that the total value of the contract could reach as much as €192m.
