In 2017 BIA has further extended the multi-component injection moulding capacity at the Solingen site. The building of a 2,800 m2 factory extension has enabled the integration of the 15 multi-component injection moulding machines in one plant. This is in response to the steadily increasing demand for multi-component products.
With the investment in an injection moulding machine with a clamping force of 1,000 tons, BIA is able to produce in-house, large multi-component moulded parts to a length of over 1.2 m. Deputy head of injection moulding, Sasa Grbesa describes the challenges and technical features to be mastered with the machine: “In order to build-in and exchange the rotary table tools which can weigh up to 16 tons, the construction of the entire production area had to be modified and equipped with appropriate lifting gear. The 24-fold hydraulic cascade of the machine enables individual control of the injection nozzles and prevents the formation of weld lines. Additionally the 6-axis placement robots allow for a high degree of flexibility”.
With injection moulding machines from 80 to 1,000 tons clamping force, rotary tables and cube moulds with 6-axis grippers as well as 2 and 3 component injection moulding capability, BIA can develop tailor-made solutions to satisfy the various customer needs on an on-going basis.
In emphasising the importance of the multi-component injection moulding facility at the Solingen site Dr Felix Heinzler, head of process engineering at BIA, commented: “multi-component injection moulding enables the production of parts with integrated functionality and selective chrome plating. This know-how gives BIA an important advantage in the increasingly competitive market and confirms BIA as a technologically innovative partner for the automobile industry”.
