Luxury carmaker BMW is recalling around 324,000 diesel vehicles in Europe in order to fix a technical fault that has caused engine fires in South Korea.
The Germany newspaper Frankfurter Allegemeine Zeitung originally reported that there have been 27 engine fires in South Korea this year, although new reports following this story suggest the total may now be more.
It is reported that the fires are down to a faulty gas recirculation module which has already caused the company to recall 106,000 vehicles in South Korea. Now the company says it is recalling 96,300 cars affected in Germany in order to replace the module is the fault is confirmed.
South Korea’s Transport Minister Kim Hyun-mee has said the country would investigate the case and take legal action if necessary. A total of 13 South Korean owners had filed a class action lawsuit against BMW as of Friday 3 August.
