Solaris now largest electric bus manufacturer in Europe

by

Polish electric bus and coach manufacturer Solaris has become Europe's largest electric bus company following three large orders from cities around Europe.

With a total of 470 electric buses due to roll off the Solaris production line in Bolechowo near Poznan to meet the orders, and a further 90 already contracted by smaller towns and municipalities, the company's Urbino model now accounts for a 25% share of all-electric buses across Europe.

The current European fleet stands at 3,500 electric buses, compared with five years ago when the total was just 240.

The boost comes after three large successive orders from public transport operators in three major cities; Milan (ATM), Berlin (BVG), and Warsaw (MZA), as well as smaller orders from 17 different European countries.

Solaris was acquired last year by Spanish railway vehicle and equipment manufacturer CAF.

At the end of 2018, the European Parliament set the goal to ensure that in 2025, half of all new city buses were to be electric. The share is set to climb to 75% by 2030.

Solaris specialises in fully bespoke electric buses for operators interested in transitioning to zero-emission public transport. Depending on the climate, the route and transport load of a line, or even the topography, electric Urbino buses may require a different specification. Solaris offers various options with regard to vehicle length, equipment, battery type, as well as charging modes and the necessary infrastructure.
