Slovenia's Hidria & BMW sign EV components supply deal

Slovenian automotive components manufacturer Hidria announced this week the signing of a supply deal with German giant BMW for the supply of aluminium steering wheel system casings for next generation hybrid and electric vehicles.

The casing forms part of a system that allows that enables automatic vertical electric steering wheel adjustments for individual drivers. 

The deal, which runs from 2023 to 2030, will see BMW use Hidria casings in all new hybrid and electric vehicles.

Green vehicles of the future equipped with such systems will come to roads in Europe and worldwide in three years' time. 

For these future vehicles, BMW will use a platform called CLAR (CLuster ARchitecture). Made of exceptionally strong steel, aluminium and carbon fibres, the platform is lighter than predecessors and, Hidria says will help improve efficiency of BMW's hybrid and electric vehicles.

While the price of the deal has not been disclosed by either company, Slovenian news agency STA reported that the contract is worth €30-million.

A press release from Hidria said: "This contract, together with new contracts for key parts of electric drive motors signed at the end of last year, assures Hidria a successful development and additional strengthening in global markets."
