Luxaviation & Lilium partner to build eVTOL airlines in Europe

Electric air mobility startup Lilium will receive support from Luxembourg-based business aircraft operator Luxaviation in building out its European airline operations, the two companies have announced.

Lilium intends to operate its seven-seat electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) air taxis using existing regional networks. The Munich-based startup has already unveiled plans for a 2024 operations launch on its first networks in Germany and Florida.

The regional airline networks will be run by Lilium itself or, in certain jurisdictions, by local air operators, the company said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this month.

Luxaviation - which manages hundreds of aircraft in its networks - will take responsibility for parts of the airline operations being developed by Lilium, the startup said, including securing the necessary approvals, pilot management and developing the customer experience.

"This marks a key milestone as we prepare for launch, and we look forward to working together to provide an exceptional airline service for our passengers," said Lilium CEO Remo Gerber.

The startup is planning to set up its first German networks through partnerships with Munich, Nuremberg, Dusseldorf and Cologne/Bonn airports.
