Ford to produce next-generation electric vans in Turkey from 2023

Automotive giant Ford has said that its next-generation of Transit van will be produced in Turkey from 2023 and will include electric and hybrid versions, as well as combustion-engine versions.

The new vans will be built by Ford Otosan, one of the automaker's Turkish joint-ventures, which is also to build a one-tonne commercial vehicle for Germany's Volkswagen, as part of an alliance between the two auto companies.

With a 15% market share, Ford is Europe's top brand of commercial vehicle, and it has led the market for 56 years.

Last month, Ford announced that its new lineup of passenger cars would be all-electric by 2030. 

Ever-stricter emissions targets and regulations in both Europe and China have coincided with rapid improvements in battery tech which provide greater range at lower costs, making electric vehicles viable in a way that they have hitherto not been.

A surge in interest in commercial electric vehicles has also come about as a result of the rise in e-commerce deliveries amid the pandemic.

Ford believes it can profit from delivery businesses needed to cut carbon emissions.

Last month, the company said that its entire commercial vehicle lineup would offer all-electric or plug-in hybrid versions by 2024 and that it expects two-thirds of its commercial vehicle sales in Europe to be all-electric or plug-in hybrid by 2030.
