They are eyeing potential industry opportunities, including participating in the reconstruction of an Indian fleet, according to a company spokesman.

Brodosplit is the largest shipyard in Croatia and is based on the north side of the Split peninsula.

The shipbuilders are something of a big name in the Indian shipbuilding community, having donated several ships to the Indian fleet back in the 1970s.

The Indian ambassador hoped this could be the beginning of a mutually beneficial business relationship.

Indian ambassador to Croatia, Raj Kumar Srivastava said in a statement: "We want to support and envision Brodosplit as a partner, i.e. as one of the shipyards that certainly meets all the necessary criteria.

"One of such possibilities is the program of reconstruction of the Indian fleet and Brodosplit is ready to participate in this large project."

The ambassador recently visited the Croatian shipyard in Split and met with the company's board of director chairman, Tomislav Debeljak.
