Langh companies support Clean Baltic Sea project

by

The Langh companies have become a partner of the John Nurminen Foundation and a supporter of the Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects. In addition to providing support, the Langh companies also aim to reduce environmental loads and develop solutions and methods for protecting the environment as part of their day-to-day operations.

“The well-being of the Baltic Sea has always been at the heart of all the Langh companies. We want to support the valuable protection efforts of the John Nurminen Foundation because we believe the Foundation’s concrete measures have produced good results for the Baltic Sea. We look forward to long-term, productive collaboration,” says Linda Langh, Managing Director of Industrial and Ship Cleaning Services Hans Langh.

The John Nurminen Foundation’s goal is to achieve a visible improvement in the state of the Baltic Sea by reducing the nutrient load on the sea. To reach that goal, the Foundation’s projects involve reducing, among other things, nutrient discharges from cities, industry and agriculture in the entire Baltic Sea basin.

Environmental protection is at the core of Langh Tech’s business, as the scrubbers developed by the company are used to reduce the sulphur content in exhaust streams in line with the limits set by the International Maritime Organization. The combination of scrubber and water treatment system developed by Langh Tech guarantees that wastewater in the closed loop scrubber can be cleaned on board the vessel, and the resulting waste is delivered in solid form to a hazardous waste disposal facility ashore. Langh Ship’s five cargo vessels were equipped with closed-loop scrubbers already in 2013.

In addition to the exhaust scrubber waste, wastewater, such as latrine wastewater, from Langh Ship’s vessels that sail to Helsinki is collected and delivered to the waste reception point at the Vuosaari harbour.

“Currently, cargo vessels can discharge their wastewater into the sea, but Langh Ship wants to prevent the Baltic Sea’s eutrophication, which is why we have been voluntarily bringing our wastewater ashore for many years now,” says Linda Langh.

Industrial and Ship Cleaning Services Hans Langh offers cleaning services for maritime, industry and construction industry operators. The company has had a valid ISO 14001 environmental certificate for close to 20 years, and it works in cooperation with various authorities to ensure that all possible environmental matters are taken into account.

“Langh companies do a lot to help the environment and the Baltic Sea. We are pleased that the Foundation has gained a supporter that promotes sustainable maritime operations through both its own actions and its innovations,” says Marjukka Porvari, Director of the John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects.
