EU suspends development funds following Myanmar coup

The European Union has suspended funds for development projects in Myanmar following the military coup on February 1 which saw the democratically-elected government under Aung San Suu Kyi.

The bloc announced it was doing this to avoid giving funds to the current ruling body, which seized power over claims of a rigged election.

The takeover saw the revocation of the country's 2008 constitution, which has formed a central part of the countries dedication toward striving for democracy.

The EU announced to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on Thursday its plans to halt all development cooperation that could stand to support military dictatorships.

The Commission has also confirmed it will be suspending budgetary support which has typically gone towards funding schools, elections and rural development worth hundreds of millions of dollars over several years.

It is likely the programs will be resumed should the military authority relinquish power.
