AI-powered hearing aid wins Tech for Change Award at CES 2021

by

A hearing aid that uses artificial intelligence engines to improve real-time listening for people with hearing loss has been awarded the Tech for Change Award at CES 2021.

The Widex Moment was chosen for having pioneered the digital hearing aid, which reduces the sound delay from 7-10 milliseconds to 0.5 milliseconds, significantly faster and providing the wearer with the most natural hearing experience to date.

Søren Hvidberg Nielsen, president of Widex US, said: “Hearing aids have historically delivered a ‘tinny’, tube-like sound due to the delay in digital sound processing; as the leader in natural sound, Widex could not stand for this. Our engineers have worked tirelessly for five years to overcome this technical challenge, and with our breakthrough Widex Moment hearing aids we’ve now succeeded.

“These intelligent devices go far beyond simply boosting speech perception, offering wearers a true-to-life sound experience that’s been elusive until now. We are honoured that Digital Trends Media Group recognised Widex Moment as an innovative, class-leading wearable and wellness device designed to make the world a better place through natural sound for all.”

The company is pioneering in the way it has utilised AI to create a sound experience for the user that is more personalised in two ways.

The technology "learns" a user's preferred way to hear their surroundings by analysing settings and taking them through a series of A-B comparisons.

Also, the AI's algorithm is able to draw from a wealth of user settings stored in the cloud which help to customise the experience for the listener.

CES is an annual exhibition and trade fair run by the US-based Consumer Technology Association (CTA).

Winners of Tech for Change award are chosen based on innovations which are intended to make the world a better place.
