Vestas secures Faroe Islands wind contract

Vestas has secured a contract to supply wind turbines to the 25 MW Torshavn onshore wind farm located on the remote Faroe Islands currently operated by Røkt and Effo.

Six Vestas turbines will be added to the farm and are set to nearly double the overall wind capacity for the Islands.

At 91.5 m tall the turbines will contain special modifications to be able to withstand and properly utilise the high winds the Arctic archipelago often faces. The turbines are set to be delivered and commissioned by the end of 2021.

Vestas will also provide service for the project through a 20-year long-term Active Output Management service contract providing energy performance assurance.

The Faroe Islands are moving towards having all its energy needs provided by renewable sources, according to Juan Furones, the Vice President for North and West Sales at Vestas, adding that "projects like this are essential as a key marker for progress."

"Vestas is proud to be involved in the renewable energy conversion of the Faroe Islands," he added.

Røkt, co-owners of the farm, has been operating from the islands since 2003 and was the first to build turbines commercially on the archipelago.

CEO Jóhan í Niðristovu revealed the island's first turbines were delivered with the help of the Danish energy company and are pleased to continue this working relationship into sustainable energy.

Effo's CEO Janus Thomsen said: “As an energy provider in the Faroe Islands for the last 100 years, we have worked hard to continuously develop and implement new sustainable energy solutions for our customers. We are delighted that this project with Vestas has been secured. This is a project that will take the sustainable production of electricity in the Faroe Islands from 40 to 67%."

Røkt and Effo were awarded the project capacity through the local state auction.

Vestas previously provided turbines to the Vindrøkt-owned Vestmanna project in the Faroe Islands, which includes three V47-660kW turbines.
