Romania's Transgaz on schedule for Moldova pipeline link

Romania's majority state-owned gas transmission company Transgaz has announced that the works are on schedule for the completion of a gas pipeline that would link the country's second-largest city, Iași, with the Moldovan capital, Chișinău.

The pipeline will connect the two cities via the small town of Ungheni in Moldova and it is scheduled for completion in the first half of this year, said Transgaz in a press release, which also dismissed continued speculation in Moldovan media about possible delays.

The project is being carried out by the Economy Ministry in Romania and Transgaz, which acquired its Moldovan counterpart Vestmoldtransgaz in September 2018 for €8.8-million.

Vestmoldtransgaz operates the existing gas transmission link between Moldova's Ungheni and Romania's Iasi. In 2018, Eurotransgaz committed to launch the construction of the Ungheni-Chisinau pipeline within up to two years.

The Ungheni - Chisinau project involves the construction of a gas pipeline 120 kilometres in length, three gas delivery stations as well as the procurement of equipment. The Iași - Ungheni section of the pipeline, put into operation in 2014, can transport about 1.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year.
