Hungary & Slovakia to boost gas interconnector capacity

Authorities in Hungary and Slovakia are working together to increase capacity of an interconnector between the two nations' gas networks said Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó following a meeting with Slovakian Minister of Economy Peter Žiga.

Szijjártó added that the capacity of the the developed interconnector will reach as much as 7 billion cubic metres in both directions.

The gas link began commercial operations in 2015 and has an annual transmission capacity of 4.5 billion cubic metres from Slovakia to Hungary and interruptible capacity of 1.8 billion cubic metres in reverse mode.

Szijjártó also said that the extra capacity would raise levels of energy security for both countries should there be a prolonged interruption to Russian gas deliveries through Ukraine as there was in 2009.

Earlier this week Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the signing of a new long-term gas agreement between his country and Russia as "a priority" and added that such a deal meant "energy security for all of Europe".
