Azelio’s energy storage power production is going live in Morocco

Swedish company Azelio is combating climate change with an award-winning thermal energy storage solution. It enables distributed and dispatchable electricity at all hours of the day at a very competitive cost. This December, Azelio’s system will be up and running in a verification project in one of world’s largest concentrated solar parks in Morocco. Volume production starts in 2021.

The electricity from Azelio’s system is produced without emissions, using no rare minerals and is less than half the cost of diesel-generated electricity per kWh. The thermal energy storage consists of recycled aluminium and can be charged with thermal energy from concentrated solar power or with electricity from PV or wind power, improving productivity from existing and planned installations.

“We are really redefining power. Enabling clean electricity when and where it is needed, all hours of the day. Using recycled aluminium as storage media makes the system highly sustainable and without degradation in capacity over time. In combination with its high energy density makes the system very cost competitive”, said Jonas Eklind, CEO of Azelio.

Azelio claims that the storage solution can help millions of people all over the world to get access to affordable and sustainable energy. The technology can provide clean and reliable electricity, modular and cost effective from 0,1 MW to 100 MW, to businesses, communities, hospitals, farms, factories, mines and more.

“To reach the UN goal of ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030, the cheapest way is to invest $220-billion (€197-billion) in micro grids, according to The World Bank. Azelio’s system can replace diesel as a renewable baseload in these micro grids, working in system with other clean energy technologies”, Eklind added.

The project in Morocco in December is a verification project, located at Ouarzazate, one of the world’s largest concentrated solar power parks. The project is carried out in cooperation with Azelio’s strategic partner Masen, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy.
