Swiss lighting firm Regent to build €8m Serbian factory

Regent, a Switzerland-based manufacturer of lighting equipment, has announced plans to construct an €8-million factory in the central Serbian town of Svilajnac, according to local media reports.

The Swiss firm has rented a 1,000 square metre (10,700 square foot) facility in the town where it is planning to begin production activities next month. Simultaneously, Regent will also construct a 6,000 square metre (65,000 square foot) factory.

The new facility will employ 130 people, and there are plans in the second phase to expand the factory by an additional 6,000 square metres.

"The decision-making process was long and detailed, we decided to come to Serbia. We considered a number of options, including Cacak and some other cities in the south of Serbia, but in the end we had a lot of support from Svilajnac municipality, so we decided to build our factory there," said Regent COO, Joerg Steimer.

Regent is based in the Swiss capital of Basel and employs a total of around 600 people in six countries. Its products are sold in 35 countries across the world.
