Electrolux invests €100m in Hungarian plant, 800 jobs lost

Swedish home appliance manufacturer Electrolux is to invest €100-million in it's Hungarian plant in Nyíregyháza, in the country's east as a means of increasing its products' competitiveness. At the same time, the company will be outsourcing its vacuum cleaner and free-standing refrigerator production in Jászberény, near Budapest to external partners.

The latest investment is set to boost Electrolux's use of Industry 4.0 tech including robots and AI.

“This great investment in our Nyíregyháza plant proves that for the Electrolux Group, Hungary is an important place within the European manufacturing market,” said Sándor Gönczy, managing director of Electrolux Hungary and vice president of Electrolux Europe.

“The new investment and the decades of experience and excellence of our Jászberény site provide a strong base and a strong competitive advantage for Electrolux.”

Electrolux had already announced back in January that it intended to make a significant reorganisation of its production in order to improve efficiency. As a result, the Jászberény plant will be closed, impacted around 800 employees.

In the announcement, Gönczy said they recognised the restructuring of their operations in Jászberény would be challenging for many of their people.

“We are proud of the experience and achievements of our colleagues and we are committed to supporting our relevant staff. And we are working with them to develop a fair and equitable social agreement,” he added.

Production in Jászberény will be outsourced from 2020, while the investments in Nyíregyháza will take place between 2020 and 2023.
