YIT to work on two Norwegian dam projects

by

Finnish construction firm YIT is to engage in two dam projects in Norway. The first will see the company build a new dam on Lake Mjåvatn to replace the present one, built in the 1940s. The second will involve the repair of the Kuli Dam that was built in the 1960s.

YIT is building the new Lake Mjåvatn dam for E-CO Energi in Norway's southern Ål region. It will be located below the old dam and eventually replace it completely. YIT will also excavate a 500 metre tunnel in the area, in addition to building the dam.

The new Mjåvatn dam will be approximately 100 metres long and 11 metres high. YIT's construction work will begin in summer 2019 and is scheduled to be completed in autumn 2020. The whole project is set to be up and running by summer 2021.

YIT has also been contracted by Agder Energi to repair the Kuli Dam in the southern municipality of Sirdal.

Built in the 1960s, the bulk of the repair work involves slip forming construction. The Kuli Dam is 22 metres high and 320 metres long.

Repair work began in May 2019 and is due to be complete by November 2020.

“Hydropower projects are an important focus for YIT’s infrastructure projects. The Mjåvatn Dam is YIT’s fourth hydropower project in Norway. The other ongoing projects are the Kuli Dam and the Jølstra and Løkjelsvatn power stations. Sustainability is an important part of YIT’s strategy, and we are proud to be involved in the development of near-zero emissions energy production for the needs of a growing population,” says Harri Kailasalo, EVP, Infrastructure projects segment at YIT.
