PORR wins €285m railway upgrade contract in Poland

Austrian construction company PORR has signed a contract for the development and modernisation of a 70 km (43.5 mile) railway line in Poland - the company's largest in the country to date.

The contract, worth €285-million, was awarded by Polish railway infrastructure manager PKP PLK and will be carried out together with its partner in the country Trakcja System.

PORR will replace a total of 135 km of track and 148 sets of switches on the railway line no. 131 between Kalina and Rusiec Łódzki. The work also includes the upgrade or overhaul of 71 civil structures, including some large viaducts like the 100 metre long section that runs over the River Warta. Additionally, all the stations along the railway line are to be fitted with platforms with disabled access.

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “First built in the 20th century, the railway line no. 131 is not only essential for passenger transport, but especially for freight."

“It links the industrial region of Upper Silesia with the ports of Gdańsk and Gdynia on the Baltic Sea. We are proud to realise our largest railway construction order in Poland to date in the form of this design & build project.”

Work on the plans for the upgrade project is to start immediately and it is anticipated that the designs will be ready within three months.

PORR said that it expects all the necessary approvals and permits to be received within 13 months and has committed itself to completing the project by May 2023.

The project will be PORR's 35th construction contract with PKP PLK since they began working on Poland's railways in 2011.
