The governments of Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina have signed a contract to provide almost €23.5-million for the construction of a second cross-border bridge on the River Sava.

The announcement was made in the Croatian capital Zagreb. The construction project will be carried out by a consortium of local companies, comprising of Bosnia's Integral Inženjering and Croatia's Đuro Đaković Montaža and Zagreb-Montaža.

Saša Dalipagić, Bosnia’s deputy minister of communications and transport said: “This contract is a contribution to better and closer ties between the two countries, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, neighbours and friends.”

“With the completion of these facilities, connections will be significantly improved,” he added.

The Croatian transport minister Oleg Butković was present at the signing ceremony and said the contract was proof that the two neighbouring countries were friends and were capable of undertaking large infrastructure projects.

The bridge will be 462 metres long and 22 metres wide with four lanes. It will connect the Croatian town of Okučani and the Bosnian town of Gradiska. The project consists of three stages including the construction of 8.5 km of access roads and should take around 30 months to complete.

Earlier this month, Bosnia's road company Autoceste FBiH announced that the first bridge across the Sava, connecting Svilaj in Croatia with Odzak in Bosni, was now 80% complete and should be inaugurated by the end of this year.
