Major aerospace players sign Sustainable Aviation Fuel pledge

Four of the major players in the aerospace sector have signed up to the Global SAF Declaration at the Singapore Airshow, which commits to the acceleration of the development, production, and consumption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The Declaration was signed by European aerospace company Airbus, engineering firm Rolls-Royce, French defence company and engine maker Safran, and Singaporean flag carrier Singapore Airlines.

In 2019, the aviation sector accounted for 2.1% of all human-related carbon emissions globally, and 12% of all transport emissions, making it one of the most polluting industries.

As such, the sector has a major part to play in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, with SAF being hailed as one of the best levers for the decarbonisation of air transport.

The Global SAF Declaration is a call for aviation, aerospace and companies in the fuel chain to work together towards the uptake of SAF, with the aim of a steady increase over the next decade.

Open to all airlines, as well as aviation and aerospace firms, the Declaration is intended to complement pre-standing commitments to sustainability.

The first airline to sign up was Singapore Airlines. 

Grazia Vittadini, Chief Technology and Strategy Officer at Rolls-Royce said: "Signing the Declaration is an important milestone for the aerospace industry. We welcome the opportunity to push for more SAF use by coming together across the value chain. It is important that we combine our efforts and focus into building the momentum required to drive this forwards.

"We are all big advocates for the development of alternative propulsion solutions including hydrogen, hybrid-electric and electric and we also recognise that SAFs are a key building block to set us on our path towards achieving our long-term decarbonisation goals."
