The German chemicals company Henkel has announced the opening of a new manufacturing facility for aerospace products near Barcelona, Spain.

Henkel has described the Montornes del Valles site as being its "European hub for the aerospace industry", supporting key sectors in the global aerospace industry such as automation, fuel efficiency and light weighting.

The opening event was attended by the mayor of Montornès and the German Counsel General as well as Henkel customers.

The chemicals group, which is based in Dusseldorf, has been supplying aircraft manufacturers and equipment suppliers with structural adhesives and surface treatments for over 40 years. It has also noted an increase in demand for "high-performance solutions" as airframers are looking to lose weight and expand automation of production.

Jan-Dirk Auris, President of Henkel Adhesive Technologies said: "Aerospace is a very attractive growth market for us, because the global demand for new passenger aircraft is expected to double over the next 20 years."

“With the new high-tech facility, we significantly expand the capacities for our leading high-impact solutions that are specified on all major aircraft platforms and increase our capabilities to develop next-generation materials for future programs. At the same time, we enlarge our global production and distribution network and enhance the proximity to our strong customer base in Europe,” he added.

The new facility is set to cost €35-million and is located close to an existing Henkel production site.
